Lava, Orchids & Aloha!

The Lava is currently flowing into the ocean with huge volume. It has moved closer to the end of Highway 130 and has taken out several houses in the Kalapana Gardens Subdivision over the last couple of months. The lava has been flowing with small interruptions since 1982 and covered the town of Kalapana in 1990. Since then this is right now the closest, the lava has ever moved back toward old Kalapana. Over the last twenty years it has shifted back and forth between the Volcanoes National Park and the Kalapana side. Many previous residents have reclaimed their properties and felt safe enough to re-cultivate their gardens and rebuild on their lots.
