2010 is coming to a close and we would like to take the opportunity to thank some of the partners we successfully worked with throughout the year. Our measure of success in working with them is our guests' positive feedback and satisfaction as a customer: Lava Ocean Adventures with their fabulous boat trips out to the lava flow, Warren Costa, the Native Guide Hawaii, with his wonderful personal tours and Isis Albright with her incredible massages at the Paradissimo Spa in Pahoa. Restaurants in the area that made our guests and us happy include: Kaleos, Paolo's Bistro, Nings' Thai Cuisine, Luquin's Mexican Cantina and the Pahoa/Kalapana Village Cafe. We would also like to give our Mahalos to many of the local vendors like Anita, our Pahoa Bread Baker, Conchita and her crew at the Keaau Farmers' Market, the staff from the Pahoa Malama Market and many more. Without all of you, it would have not been the same and we feel very grateful to have such a wonderful network of partners who help create an unforgettable Hawaii travel experience for our guests and make living here for us very special.

Hawaii - Mele Kalikimaka me ka Hau'oli Makahiki Hou - Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year

The year is coming to an end and we would like to send our Hawaiian Holiday Greetings to all of you. Many of you have stayed with us this year or have recommended us to your family and friends. We would like to express our sincere Mahalos to you.

The year seems to have gone by faster than ever. We think this phenomenon might be part of the process of getting older. Our children have grown a lot and Alyssia is now 6 and in first grade and Christopher is 8 and in third grade.

In 2010 we have taken important steps in improving our Bed & Breakfast services: The Garden Suite - our one-bedroom suite - has received a complete renovation from top to bottom. For the Lanai Suite - our two-bedroom suite - we undertook a beautiful makeover of the bathroom and master bedroom. In the Studio we added a refrigerator for our guests' convenience. All suites have new beds with comfy mattresses and many interior design elements were up-dated and changed. We added a number of amenities including fee WiFi throughout our property, snorkels, maps, flashlights and boogie boards to borrow and as always available our laundry facilities, our BBQ grill and our personal advice.

We are now in several guidebooks, including the Lonely Planet, Let's Go Hawaii, the MOON Handbook for the Big Island of Hawaii and two Japanese Travel books. You can also find us on Google Maps, Facebook and Twitter.

For 2011 our believe in excellent customer service and our wish to share the beauty of our little paradise and the warm Aloha remain unchanged. Your comfort and enjoyment during your stay is of utmost importance to us. We strive to make your Hawaii family vacation or romantic getaway as memorable and relaxing as possible. The details and the privacy of our suites reflect the sense of caring and Aloha that we extend to our guests.

Hawaii Big Island: Lava Tree State Monument Re-opened

Lava Tree State Monument, one of Puna's jewels, is just around the corner from Hale Moana Hawaii Bed & Breakfast.  The park was closed in September of this year, when construction for improvements started. Improvements included alterations to the parking with access aisle, comfort station, pathway to the picnic pavilion and related signage.The Department of Land and Natural Resources finished construction at the Lava Tree State Monument recently and the park was re-opened, today.

 

The park is unique with its lava formations and tropical vegetation. The 0.7-mile loop trail meanders through a forest of lava trees. It is the result of a lava flow that swept through this area in 1790. The lava trees formed when the liquid lava, at about 2000° F, came in contact with the cool, wet ohi’a trees.  A quickly-cooled coating of lava congealed around the trees and buried them to a depth of as much as 11 feet.  The original trees burned away, but their hollow casts stand today, so perfectly molded inside that imprints of the tree bark remain. The rest of the flow passed on, perhaps draining away down the numerous cracks in this area that formed contemporaneously with the flows; one of the cracks which likely drained the lava away is still visible.

This rift was both the delivery tube of the lava stream and the conduit down which it drained away after forming the lava trees at Lava Trees State Monument.
