AUGUST PROGRAMS

Saturday & Sunday, August 6 & 7, 2011
from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

NATURE PHOTOGRAPHY WITH JACK JEFFREY. Join award-winning photographer and wildlife biologist Jack Jeffrey for inspirational sessions of photographing the splendor of Hawai‘i’s natural environment. Learn to photograph plants, flowers, insects, birds (only if visible), scenics, and other native natural history subjects the way the professionals photograph them. Various aspects of nature photography will be discussed, including equipment, exposure, composition, lighting, close-ups, and photo ethics. DAY 1 is designed for those with point-and-shoot cameras, and those with limited field experience using their cameras. DAY 2 is for those who are more advanced since it will be a tip, tricks, and techniques seminar for those who have completed Day 1 or who have some experience with their cameras in the field. For either day, cost per person is $55 for members and $75 for non-members. For both days, cost per person is $95 for members and $135 for non-members. Students (K-12 and college with valid student ID) are half-price. Non-members are welcome to join the Friends to get the member discount. To register, contact Hawai‘i Volcanoes Institute, part of Friends of Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park, at (808) 985-7373 or sign up online at www.fhvnp.org.

Sunday, August 14, 2011
from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

SUNDAY WALK IN THE PARK. This monthly program on second Sundays is aimed at bringing together the members of the Friends to share in the park’s beautiful trails. Led Nick Shema, this month’s three-hour, four-mile hike will explore Kilauea Iki Crater. The trail descends through the rain forest, with native birds flitting through the canopy, to the still-steaming crater floor. This hike, rated moderately difficult, traverses pahoehoe lava and forested trails, with a 400’ elevation drop and gain. Bring a bag lunch and meet at the park’s resources management parking lot. The walk is free to Friends members (though non-members are welcome to join the non-profit Friends group in order to attend). To register, contact Friends of Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park at (808) 985-7373 or programs@fhvnp.org. For more info, visit www.fhvnp.org.

Friday, August 19, 2011
from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

VOLUNTEER FOREST RESTORATION PROJECT. This month we will work at the Kahuku Unit of Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park, located off Highway 11 between mile markers 70 and 71 in Ka‘u. We will collect seeds from native plants for propagation in the park’s native plant nursery. We’ll also learn about the park’s native forest restoration program at Kahuku. Volunteers should be at least 12 years old, and be able to hike at least one mile over rough, uneven terrain covered by thick pasture grasses in an area with a moderate slope. Our goal is a crew of 12 people, and pre-registration is required. To register, contact Friends of Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park at (808) 985-7373 or forest@fhvnp.org. For more info, visit www.fhvnp.org.
